Koodankulam Safety Concerns

Several experts around the world agree that the VVER-1000 reactors are not safe at all. The specific safety problems include the integrity of the reactor pressure vessel, the reliability of the safety shutdown system, the reliability of the plants' steam generators, and the possibility of broken steam-lines within the plant whipping around and destroying everything in their path including vital safety, electrical supply, and control systems. Back in late 1997 Dr. Alexei Yablokov, Chairman of the Russian National Ecological Security Council, stated that the Russian reactors were "highly unsafe."
